About Stromectol
Stromectol is the brand name under which the medicine Ivermectin is registered and approved. Stromectol is available on prescription and falls under the class of drugs called Anthelmintics. It is used alone or in conjunction with other medications to treat the symptoms of specific nematode-parasitic attacks and infections in the body. Such parasitic infections include Onchocerciasis, also known as River Blindness with the causative parasite Onchocerca volvulus, and Strongyloidiasis, which is caused by Strongyloides stercoralis and affects the intestinal tract. Ivermectin is also administered topically for the treatment of head lice (Pediculus capitis).
Contraindications and Precautions
Patients who exhibit hypersensitivity to any of the medicine’s components are not recommended to employ the use of Stromectol.
Patients with severe cases of hepatic disease and asthma should be given Stromectol with circumspection. The general use of ivermectin has been reported to worsen asthma affecting the bronchi, and the drug also boosts hepatic metabolism.
Patients with immune-weakening conditions like cancer and HIV/AIDS may require extended use of this drug, or as directed by a physician.
Nursing mothers on the prescription may transmit traces of ivermectin to the infant through breast milk. Professional advice should be sought before commencing treatment with this product.
Alcohol is known to intensify some side effects of ivermectin and should be avoided entirely during the treatment phase.

- The appearance of Stromectol and its Dosage
Stromectol is usually white, sometimes yellowish-white, with a crystalline structure. It is non-hygroscopic and insoluble in water. Orally, Ivermectin is available in flat, round, and chamfer-edged 3 mg tablets. Topical alternatives come in 1% cream and 0.5% lotion mixtures, respectively.
Dosage and administration of Stromectol are reliant on the type of symptoms a patient may be experiencing.
The recommended oral dosage for onchocerciasis in children, adolescents and adults weighing 15 kg or more is 150 mcg per kg of the patient’s body weight. The medicine should be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before a meal. The treatment of strongyloidiasis requires a slightly higher dosage of 200 mcg/kg of body weight.
Onchocerciasis Dosage Guideline
Strongyloidiasis Dosage Guideline
All oral doses are administered singly. Dosage repetition may be required months apart to ensure effective treatment. Recurrent stool samples may be needed to confirm that Stromectol is working as it should.
For the topical treatment of lice (pediculosis capitis, pediculosis corporis, and pediculosis pubis) and nits, apply a liberal amount of ivermectin lotion to your dry hair, it is permissible to use the whole tube at once. Cover the hair and scalp thoroughly with the lotion and leave in for ten minutes, then rinse off with tepid water.
After use, remove dead lice and nits with a fine-toothed comb and wait a full day before shampooing.
